An interesting story of Makati vs BGC

Hey there! So, you know how the local city governments of Makati and Taguig in the Philippines had a bit of a squabble over their territories? Yeah, that happened!

The conflict stems from the historical background of the area. Fort Bonifacio was once a military base owned by the Philippine Army.

However, due to financial constraints, the government decided to privatize and develop the area, leading to its transformation into the bustling commercial and residential district now known as BGC.

Former Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay claimed that Fort Bonifacio fell within the territorial jurisdiction of Makati. This claim was based on historical accounts suggesting that the land was part of Makati before being ceded to Taguig during the American colonial period. Binay argued that Makati should have the right to govern and collect taxes from the lucrative developments in BGC.

As of today, the conflict in question may not be readily apparent to the multitude of residents and professionals residing and operating within the Bonifacio Global City (BGC). However, it is primarily Makati’s detriment that these territories are being relinquished, as they previously offered essential services within those vicinities.

With the development of the Manila Subway and other big infrastructure projects of the country some of which were actually signed into by the late president Noynoy Aquino and now being realized by BBM’s leadership will make Makati and BGC awesome spots to visit and work in. Here’s hoping for smoother sailing ahead!
